Davao Oriental is the easternmost province in southern Mindanao. Embedded on the east side by Davao Province that expand to form an oasis separating Davao Gulf on the west from the Pacific Ocean on the east. The mainland is surrounded by the provinces of Agusan del Sur and Surigao del Sur on the north.
A highly irregular pattern follows the northeastern coast of Mindanao facing the Pacific Ocean. The province topography is composed of huge mountain ranges with uneven distribution of plateaus, swamps and lowlands. The rivers of Sumlog in Luzon, Mayo in Mati and Cateel River bequeath the main county.
Some of the minorities that abound the province are the Manobos and Mandayas. Manadayas composed most natives of Davao Oriental. Known for their typical dresses of woven cloth of abaca fiber colored with bark and earthy eyes. The women traditionally wear embroidered cotton jackets, tube-like hand woven abaca skirts while the men wear a loose and wide blue or white cotton trousers. The people reside in remote mountain clearings, hunting wild pigs and deer using their own version of spears.
Agriculture compose the province main economic industry. Coconuts, rice, corn, vegetables and fruits are their major products. Durian is a very popular fruit in Davao, processed and make into preserves and sweets. Davao Gulf and the bays of Pujada, Maya, Baculin and Cateel provides the province huge amount of fishing grounds and its best season is from March to September. The Menzi Citrus Plantation near Mati is a 250-hectares farm, which grows oranges, grapes and mangoes.
Davao Oriental is rich in both natural and historical attractions. Among the historical sites of Davao are Bellestic Island, which has fortress ruins built by the Spanish conquistador Villalobos and the 17th Century Caraga Catholic Church.
Their natural attractions are hot springs like Kalapagan and Pangyan, good place for swimming and hunting for small games. Islands of Sigaboy, a tropical paradise with its white sand beaches and deep waters is ideal for fishing and coral and shell hunting. The Aliwagwag Falls, the highest falls in the country is also found in the province.
The Sigaboy Floating in Governor Generosa is an islet, which bears an uncanny resemblance to a giant whale, floating aimlessly over the calm sea.
Access to the city proper of Davao del Sur is thru buses coming from Davao City from there you can arrive by plane, a 1 hr and 40 min. flight from Manila to Davao City.
